. There is also an upscale resort nearby, but the beach is open for everybody. The beach is mediocre, but it doesn't matter here. Local killer feature are boat tours to Samana Bay to watch whales - in the winter half of the year. Probably, this is the main reason to visit this place. Shore and seabed: sand. 
Hotels  Bahia Principe Grand Cayacoa
is a good five-star hotel, but almost not presented in the international booking systems. However, if you only want to see the whales, feel free to choose any suitable hotel in town. The beach is definitely not worth to visit this place. Find hotels in Playa Cayacoa

It is convenient to use a taxi, which is relatively inexpensive. For example, a trip from south to north of the country can cost $100.

When to go 
Feel free to relax in Dominicana any time of year. The sea is warmest in summer, but the heat is the most intense as well. And there is also a hurricane season from June to October. On the other side, the winter weather is more comfortable, but seawater at the northern coast is too cold that time.
